Ban on gambling advertising in Spain is against EU law

The Spanish ban on advertising of gambling is contrary to European Union regulations. This was recently announced by the European Gambling and Betting Association (EGBA). The country has introduced a ban on sponsorship of sports organizations by gambling companies, and advertising on TV and radio is allowed only at night.

However, the government made one exception. All these prohibitions do not apply to the state lottery, which is massively advertised. European experts from EGBA drew attention to this. They sent their opinion to Spain’s Consumer Protection Ministry, pointing out violations of EU competition rules.

It also turned out that the country’s actions were not entirely justified. A study by the University of Madrid showed that only 0.3% of gambling residents suffer from gambling addiction. And this is a very low figure, which should not have led to such restrictions.
