Macau authorities are considering whether to allow online gambling or not

The director of Macau’s gambling regulator said the government is considering legalizing online gambling. But before making any decision, they must conduct thorough research, which at this point has not yet ended.

Consideration of possible legalization was dictated by the current situation this year. Due to the coronavirus, the income of Macau, which mainly makes money from casinos, has been hit hard. As a result, tax revenues to the budget decreased by 74% in 10 months.

The regulator noted that the legalization of online and proxy gaming would help increase the industry’s revenues, but they fear an increase in cases of money laundering and gambling addiction. The regulator said that they are ready to listen to proposals on this matter from the industry, society and legislators.
