We will consider various motives for writing and reading poetry, and various methods of reading it. No previous tutoring experience is necessary. To complement our readings we will incorporate films, music, and visual art to demonstrate the multiple and diverse ways that black artistic culture has served as a means of political resistance, reflection and inspiration. We will read a short novel each week and the course will survey the long arch of the American novel from the mid-nineteenth to the twenty-first century. We will explore the theory and practice of peer tutoring through reading and discussion of research as well as through practical experience.

This course is a study of the mythological roots of literatures such as Greek, Roman, Indian, African, and Chinese mythology, tales from the Bible, and folk material such as ballads, fables, and proverbs. Throughout the twentieth century writers had to represent the “nightmare” of history. The course is designed to give students a critical awareness of language and to teach language techniques through extensive readings. This course prepares students for ENG Theory and Development Prerequisites: Students will study grammar, not only through rules and textual models, but also in the context and practice of their own writing and editing. The emphasis is on analyzing literature as a way of developing personal style.
We read a unique work of contemporary poetry each week as a framework for discussion, but the core of the course is student writing. This course, conducted as a workshop, is for students interested in exploring their writing style within the basic imaginative genres: The curriculum gives students practice in drafting, revising, and editing their writing; in using clear, succinct, standard English in expository, analytical, and practical writing assignments.
It includes works that focus on conservation and ecology. Readings will likely include a broad sampling of poets and poetry, an ancient Greek drama or two, a modern drama, short stories that are both realistic and experimental in form, and one short novel.
Do these genres ever intersect? How Native American literature adapts oral literature and its traditions to the requirements of written literature is central to the course. Regular attention is paid to grammar and techniques of revision.
